Q: I noted that your fee is $450 for the initial consultation. My doctor only charges $150 for an office visit. How can you charge so much more?
A: That's an excellent question. I do have people, from time to time, ask me the same question. When your doctor sees you in his office for $150 you may actually only see him for ten to fifteen minutes. Let's say that you get their attention for a full 15 minutes. Multiply $150 by 4 (15min) and you find that you're actually are paying $600 an hour. Add in all the tests and medication they may prescribe to you and you can see that office visit has become very expensive. My initial consultation includes complete review of your medical history which will take me one to two hours, a phone consultation which will last from 45min to 90min depending upon the complexity of your health and then another four to six hours to design an initial Diabetic Weight Management plan for your doctor to approve. Let's be conservative and say I only invest six hours into your case divide that by $450 and my fee only comes down to $75/hr or about $17 for the fifteen minutes your doctor would have spent with you and charged you $150. Does this make more sense?
Q: Where have you been for the last thirty years that I've been struggling with my weight? I've tried everything and I do mean everything. Every diet or gadget that comes out and I simply couldn't lose weight. I was 5'4" at 262lbs. I hated myself and I knew my children were embarassed to be seen with me. I've lost nearly 50lbs in the last 90 days or so. I can't believe it. The money I could have saved! You know it really does come down to having someone create a custom plan for you. I knew most of the stuff you showed me I just didn't know how to put it all together. I can't believe anyone would not want this. What do you usually tell people when they say your price is too high? My god the money I've wasted on products and supplements which were useless!
A: Funny you should mention this. The above answer should answer your question. When I was first getting started I had a woman tell me that my fee was too high. I asked her how much she spent every month on supplements. She told me she averaged about $75/mo. I then asked her how she knew if the supplements worked. She told me she really didn't but they were recommended by a popular TV show host. I asked her how long she'd been on these supplements that she didn't know if they worked or not? She told me about a year. I then asked her how much it would be worth for her to know for sure what supplements she needed, if she needed any at all and how much it would be worth to her to learn how she could help her body heal itself? Like you did in the past, many people waste their money on things without really knowing if they work or not.
Q: I love my Diabetic Weight Management plan! This is perfect. I'm losing weight. I haven't looked at the scale but I'm looking at the notches in my belt and it's telling me WOW! Is there anyway to speed up the process and help me lose faster?
A: Unfortunately, there is no way to speed up your body to lose even more. Keep in mind that you're doing much more than losing weight, you're allowing your body to heal, you're ridding your body of toxins and you're learning to enjoy your food again. Most importantly, you're learning to master your health so that you can effortlessly maintain your health.
Q: Can you cure my diabetes?
A: No, only a doctor can cure. The best that I can do is provide you with the information, support and tools for you to help your body heal itself and experience a spontaneous remission.
Q: I'm thinking about providing a similar service. Is it really difficult to work with doctors? I heard that doctors are very difficult to work with.
A: I haven't had any problems. Most doctors who care about their patients know they can't provide for all of their client's needs. They frequently outsource for such things as physical therapy, nutrition, exercise, etc.. If you present yourself as just another provider of services for them to refer to you shouldn't have any problems.
Q: Do you take referals from chiropractors?
A: Yes I do. Many diabetics will seek out a chiropractor because of problems with their backs or legs. The primary issue usually comes down to being overweight. This is something that most chiropractors are usually ill equipped to help their clients with. Diabetes is a complicated issue. Many chiropractors will refer their patients to me for a custom Diabetic Weight Management plan.
Q: Can it get any easier? I love your Hawaiian chicken. Did you create this yourself? Every meal you gave me is like being on vacation. They're super simple and taste delicious!
A: I wish I did create that one. It's one of my favorites. A friend of mine created it. She's a bit of a "mad scientist" when it comes to recipes for diabetics.
Q: You know, I always thought that heartburn was caused by having too much acid. That's why I was popping so many TUMS. I don't quite understand how TUMS is bad for me?
A: Yes the TUMS advertisements would have you believe that you have heartburn because you have too much stomach acid. The fact is that you have heartburn because you don't have enough antacids. Use the trick with the water and you'll discover that your heartburn will disappear. BTW: Popping antacids for calcium is not a good idea. It's more likely you don't need calcium and the aluminum you get with this is absorbed into your bones and can weaken your muscles.
Q: What do you think of Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution? Before getting on your program I tried it. It didn't work for me but I was wondering if you use any of this recommendations or if you thought he was on the right track?
A: Honestly, I haven't read it. It would be a full time job to keep up with every doctor who comes out with a cure for one disease or the other. My understanding is that he's basically recommending a low-carb diet. I'll go along with that. However, diabetes as you're aware is a little more complicated that that. If that was all there was to it then those on the Atkins diet would have cured diabetes a long time ago. I incorporate high quality carbs into meal plans but I also know there are other foods such as grains which suppress the thyroid which causes weight gain. As long as you're overweight you are at high risk for diabetes.
Q: The ADA says it's ok for me to eat sugar or sweeteners. Would you recommend it?
A: Only to those at the FDA who approve artificial sweeteners, vegetable oils and genetically altered foods. And of course those on the Board of Directors of the ADA.
Q: Can you guarantee that your program will work?
A: Life does not come with guarantees. You can't guarantee that you won't get hit by a car. You can't guarantee that you won't get a cold this year. You can't guarantee that you're favorite show will be on tonight. There are no guarantees in life. But let me ask you, if you don't do something about your diabetes and weight what is the possibility that you're going to get worse?
Q: I had to nag my doctor to give me a referral to your Diabetic Weight Management Program. One of the things that impressed me the most is that you make me accountable for my own health. You answer my questions honestly and help me to find outside sources to verify your information. I've lost quite a bit of weight and I've finally regained control over my sugar levels. My husband was recently diagnosed with being borderline diabetic. He has a family history of diabetes. We're on a tight budget. Can he use my program?
A: I'm sorry to hear your husband has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, your program will not work for him. Your Diabetic Weight Management program was custom designed just for you. Here's what I can do. I understand about finances being tight. If you can cover the initial consultation (this is the most labor intensive part) I'm willing to waive the $175/wk and include it in with yours. He will have his own separate program but your family won't incur the added cost. Will that help?
Q: You are a pleasure to work with. I admit I was very resistant to some of the things you had to say expecially when it came to supplements. But I verified your information and you're 100% correct. I want to thank you for recommendation for a supplement to help me with my pain. It did wonders! Much better than the pain medication my doctor gave me. I was in agony. I've had a pinched nerve for quite awhile and this is the only thing I've found to help me. Is the other version better?
A: Be sure to go to a neurosurgeon for help with your Sciatica. There's no reason for you to continue to be in pain. They can offer you physical therapy alternatives and I believe some chiropractors have a machine for helping to decompressed herniated discs. Herniated discs can be a very dangerous thing. Get to your doctor and never depend upon any pain medication or supplement. These are only intended for temporary relief not to avoid seeing proper medical help. As to your question, yes there is a superior form of the supplement but it cost $75 and I don't really believe that you would receive $75 worth of relief. Again, it's best to address the issue rather than ignore it.
Q: I can't believe I've been so stuipid about food. I thought I was eating healthy. I was eating vegetables, fruit, yogurt and other things but I simply couldn't get my sugar levels down. Now I know what the problem was. It was the choices themselves. How can our government allow this kind of disception? Because of this I almost had to go on insulin not to mention risk losing my vision, my independence, heart failure, stroke or having a limb amputated. Someone should do something!
A: I share your indignation but as long as you're doing something that is a step in the right direction. Along the way you can share your information and success with others. You were not stupid in choosing your food. You simply had misplaced trust that there was some kind of system in place to protect our food supply.
Q: I am completely flabergasted! I read your email about reading the labels and knowing what they really meant. I shop mostly at my local health food store. Do you know that most of the stuff at the health food store are filled with the same poisons? How can health food stores do this? Don't they have any concious?
A: I forget which one but one of the major health food stores recently was charged with fraud and a lot of other things for misleading and misrepresenting the items in their store. You would have thought this would have sent a wakeup call to the others but it didn't. It's not until they're caught that changes are made. However, don't go after your small "mom and pop" health food stores. There's no excuse for the large chains who can afford to have someone verify the quality and ingredients of their products. For small "mom and pop" stores they're simply struggling to stay in business and they try to offer their consumers with what their often uninformed consumers demand. If Oprah says drink 10w50 motor oil this week to lose weight then there is going to be a demand for 10w50 motor oil at the health food store. (Common sense usually disappears when an expert recommends something) The small stores simply try to provide the consumers with what they ask for. Now that you know what to ask for place requests with your health food store and educate others to do the same.
Q: You're probably tired of hearing about the ADA. Why would they endorse artificial sugars? I don't understand this at all. I'm trying to make sense of all of this. I feel like I'm either going crazy or trapped in some really bad nightmare.
A: You're not going crazy you're going sane in an insane world. My understanding is that the Monsanto Corp (can you say Nutrasweet?) provides funding for the ADA.
Q: I've been on a few forums for diabetes and there is so much conflicting information and opinons. What should I listen to and what should I ignore? I am so confused.
A: Ignore it all. You have a lot of people who are well-intentioned but only giving their opinion on what seems to work for them. It's important to remember that all diabetics have different levels of diabetes, health problems, lifestyles, genes, etc... What may work for one person won't work for another. You have a lot of people simply stumbling around in the dark looking for a black cat that doesn't exist.
Q: I want thank you for your kindness, compassion and allowing me to participate in your Diabetic Weight Management program. When I discovered that I was borderline diabetic and the next step for me was insulin I was very depressed. I thought my life was over. That I was condemened to a life of eating a highly restricted diet, taking insulin shots and being sick all of my life. I am a highly independent person who's owned their own business and thrives in social situations. You showed me that my fate was in my hands. How many holistic practitioners are there that specialize in Diabetic Weight Management? Are they all like you?
A: Thank you for your heart-felt compliments. The term holistic means that a practitioner helps the client to heal themselves. It doesn't matter if the person has diabetes, asthma, Fibromyalgia, or any other disease. The whole body must be taken into account and a protocol designed to help the client heal themselves. My protocols would also help people with Fibromyalgia or any other disease. I just choose to specialize in diabetes because it is a preventable disease and can be reversed in a short period of time. Any holistic health practitioner should be able to help anyone with information, tools and support so they can heal themselves. As with any profession you have various levels of competency, knowledge and experience. Always keep in mind that holistic health practitioners do not heal. They recognize this is beyond their power. All they can do is provide you the information, tools and support for you to heal yourself.
